April 4, 2024: Join Blacksburg Young Professionals, The Blacksburg Partnership, and the Community Foundation of the New River Valley on Thursday, April 11 as they bring New River Valley (NRV) young professionals together to deepen connections to the NRV community. The event, “Take Your Seat at the Table” will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center at 1691 Innovation Drive (Suite 1025) in Blacksburg.

Nonprofits in the NRV are in great need of volunteers, including diversified boards and planning committees that include younger demographics. Take Your Seat at the Table will educate young professionals (those early in their careers in their 20s and 30s) on how to utilize their passions and backgrounds to help address and understand community needs as volunteers.

The Need for Volunteers

“Many nonprofits conduct our work on slim budgets and with minimal staffing. Some nonprofits depend solely on volunteers,” said Sandy Hagman, board chair of the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry. “Volunteers bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to our mission. There is opportunity for all from a single project to weekly or monthly staffing needs or serving on a Board. Without volunteers we cannot exist.”

Additionally, since the pandemic, there has been an increased need for board members and other volunteers for nonprofits. This need for volunteers, paired with the interest from young professionals, is how the idea for the event started.

Connecting with Young Professionals

“We hear from boards and groups around the NRV that they need young professionals to hold board positions and from young professionals expressing their interest in getting involved,” said Angie Marcolini, president of Blacksburg Young Professionals. “This event marries the two and creates an avenue beneficial to young professionals and local nonprofits.”

The event will include nonprofit booths, a panel discussion, and networking over drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Up to 100 attendees are expected to attend. Nonprofit attendees will include representatives from: Agape Center, Beans and Rice, Inc., Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, Giles Community Garden, Live, Work, Eat, Grow, Montgomery County Christmas Store, NRV Agency on Aging, Plenty!, and The Common Ingredient.

Panelists will include community professionals and advocates: Erika Newberry (American Cancer Society), Angela Joyner (Radford University), and Jason Hardy (Carter Bank.) The panel moderator will be Jessica Wirgau (Community Foundation of the New River Valley) and the event emcee will be Ann Cassell (The Blacksburg Partnership.)
