Who Are Our Grantees?

Rosemary Blieszner and Steve Gerus (a founding board member) established the first fund at the CFNRV. In 1997, this fund gave out $3,000 in grants supporting various education initiatives. Since then, donors have established more than 180 grant-making funds. In total, these funds have awarded $7.4 million to organizations around our region.

The CFNRV now has two programs in our annual competitive grant cycle. The application for both programs opens at the end of each May.

  • The Responsive Grant Program provides operating support to 501(c)3 nonprofits and units of government (such as libraries) that serve the New River Valley. By providing operating support, organizations have the flexibility to put grant dollars where they are needed most.
  • The Education Grant Program provides funding for programs or projects at public schools that serve the New River Valley. Applications supporting basic student needs (such as clothing, food, or school supplies) are welcome, as are projects that enhance the classroom or school experience and/or support student clubs, afterschool programs, and extracurricular activities.
